Is an All-Inclusive Resort Worth It for a Family of Four?

People ask us this almost every week, usually right after they've looked at a resort's nightly rate and felt their stomach drop. The honest answer is that it depends on how your family actually eats and plays, so let's walk through it.

Where the math usually works

Take a family of four staying five nights. Between breakfast, lunch, snacks and a couple of dinners out, most families with teenagers spend more on food than they expect, and drinks add up fast. When the package covers meals, non-alcoholic drinks, and sometimes activities like kayaks, tennis or the kids' club, the all-inclusive price often lands close to what you'd pay for a standard room plus a food budget. Some resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean run specials where the second child stays free, and that's where the savings really show.

It also helps if you want to stop tracking every bill. Parents traveling with young kids tell us the peace of mind is worth something real, especially when nobody has to pull out a wallet at the pool.

Where it doesn't

If your crew eats one big breakfast and then wanders into town for tacos, you're paying for meals you won't eat. Same goes for families who plan to spend most days off the property on excursions. Check whether the package includes airport transfers, and whether top-shelf liquor or specialty restaurants cost extra, because those upgrades are where the bill creeps back up.

We also watch for resorts where the included dining is limited to one buffet and two sit-down spots that book out early. Ask about reservation rules before you commit.

How to decide

Write down what your family ate on your last trip, roughly, and what you spent. Then compare that to the package total with taxes and gratuities included, since many all-inclusives add a service charge. If the numbers are close, pick the all-inclusive for the simplicity. If there's a clear gap either way, go with that.

Bring us your dates and the resorts you're considering, and we'll run the comparison for you. We check the current inclusions directly, because they change more often than the brochures suggest.
